Village Antique Mall Finds: Uptown Chic Barbie

Since the 1950s, Barbara Millicent Roberts, also known as Barbie, was created as a little girls toys, made to inspire and influence little girls. Her creator, Ruth Handler, said she wanted to show that, "women had choices," according to culture trip short post. 

Barbie grew into a popular American children's toy and brand. In the 1960s, Barbie meets Ken, and even moves into her notorious Dream House. Live action Barbie became popular in the 1970s, and Malibu Barbie was marketed as a surfer girl, and later in the decade, Barbie wins the Winter Olympics and her and Ken get placed in an American Time Capsule. In 1980, Barbie finally gets a career, and Dr. Barbie, Astronaut Barbie and Pilot Barbie hit the shelves. Also in 1980, Andy Warhol claimed Barbie was him, and painted her. In 1990, Barbie joined the Women of the Year movement, and ran for president and Barbie for President a.k.a. Campaign Barbie was seen in stores. She went into the 2000s with her new friend, who was in a wheelchair. In early 2000s, Barbie took a spin, as she turned 50 years old, ended her relationship with Ken, and got a few tattoos. In the early 2000s, we see Tattoo Barbie and Black Canary (Barbie) on the shelves. Barbie today is more diversified, and attempts to reflect the average 19 year-old-American female and uses the phrase, "average is beautiful."
