EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW with Local Artist Jamie Sloane on "Master's Series" Art Exhibition.

Sloane Square Art Gallery Will Hold an Opening Reception to the Master’s Series Art Exhibition this Thursday on 14STW!

The Master’s Series Art Exhibition by local Artist Jamie Sloane will take place this Thursday at the Sloane Square Art Gallery at 6PM here on 14STW! Sloane said the gallery will feature portraits and interpretations of his favorite “Master Artists,” including Frida Kahlo, Gustav Klimt, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Yayoi Kusama, Jeff Koons, David Hockney, Vincent Van Goh, and many more Artists’ portraits from all different backgrounds.

Composting Art

Sloane said he was inspired to do this art exhibition as a way to honor and appreciate his favorite “Master Artists.” He said when creating art, he takes close consideration as to what motifs to create and use. Sloane used to compose music, specifically orchestral symphonies and chamber music, and said when composing music, you create motifs to harmonize and communicate the piece. He said he still thinks in those terms as now composing visually through his artwork.

“I created motifs as I would with music, and I used them [the Artists] as the subject to incorporate those motifs, such as pointillism and black and white stripes, and throw those around in the paintings to give them a sense of interest in a musical kind of way.”

The Art of Business

Sloane had a hard time choosing when asked which of the “Master Artists” was his favorite because they all contributed so much to the art world. He said he liked Picasso because he bent the rules with his artwork, and pretty much did whatever he wanted, which he said was similar to his art lifestyle; however, he said his favorite piece in the exhibit was the Jeff Koons portrait. Jeff Koons was a “Businessman gone Artist,” Sloane explained.

“Whatever they were before, they bring into their artwork,” Sloane said. “He didn’t really do his own artwork, but he comes up with the idea behind it all and would hire the best people to get it done. He’s added such great business into the art world that he was successful, and I like him for that.” Sloane shared that when he created his famous Bauhaus sculpture, he created it with digital software and he utilized a similar strategy to what Koons did with his artwork, hiring welders and others to help make the unveiling happen.

The Inspiration of Public Art

Sloane said he once had a girl come into the store and say, “this store gives me hope,” and often he still asks himself what exactly she meant by hope. “Maybe it gives them hope because the things I do are different. I think it encourages [people] to think outside the box and be playful and fun. To live in the elastic city of life and not be so constricted.” Sloane said he constantly is seeking something new and new ideas. He said he gives his fresh and problem-solving personality from his mom, who found joy in constantly seeking something new. “I like to create things that are just different,” he said. “Whatever I do, I know it’s going to be risky, but it has to be good in the end when I hang it up on the wall.”
