Winter Solstice 3 Now on Display at Gallery 610

This winter, Gallery 610 invites the community to slow down, look closer, and experience the season through the eyes of six regional artists in Winter Solstice 3. Running January 15th through February 28th, this group exhibition explores a simple but powerful prompt posed to each participating artist: What does winter mean to you?

RenewAll's mission is to catalyze Central City’s thriving economic future by connecting residents and entrepreneurs with our creative and industrial heritage. Located inside Village Antiques, Gallery 610 was established as a professional venue for regional artists to exhibit and sell their work in the heart of Central City.

Meet the Artists of Winter Solstice 3

Diane Arthur Smallwood (work featured above) brings decades of artistic practice to the exhibition. A retired registered nurse who paints professionally, Diane is largely self-taught and works across watercolor, pastel, acrylic, oil, and sculpture. Her work has been exhibited widely across the Tri-State and collected nationally and internationally. In addition to earning numerous awards, she has dedicated much of her career to teaching and mentoring artists of all ages, from students to seniors.

Frances “Ann” Grimes (work featured to the right) is a lifelong West Virginian whose creative practice spans painting, fiber arts, and sculpture. After a 33-year career teaching art in West Virginia public schools, Ann continues to explore new techniques including needle felting, weaving, and the use of recycled materials. Her work reflects both whimsy and resourcefulness, honoring lessons passed down through generations.

Lydia Ziolkowski Azzarone (work featured at the bottom), originally from Northern Nevada and now living outside Huntington, draws inspiration from nature, fashion, and femininity. Working in acrylics, printmaking, collage, paper mâché, and digital art, Lydia balances her personal studio practice with her role as a high school art educator. She remains actively engaged in local and online art communities, continually expanding her creative reach.

Kathryn Thompson (work featured to the left), a native West Virginian and lifelong West End resident, creates work that exists at the crossroads of fantasy, nature, and the supernatural. Primarily working in oils and gouache, Kathryn also experiments with unconventional painting surfaces. After graduating from Marshall University during the economic shutdown of 2020, she transitioned into professional artistry and now teaches K–12 art locally, bringing both imagination and mentorship into the classroom.

Hannah Fitzgerald (work featured at the bottom), a fine artist and photographer based in West Virginia, blends humor, curiosity, and a love of the eerie into her work. Known for portraiture and editorial-style photography, Hannah recently began a new body of work inspired by rediscovered “mistint” paints during home renovations. Her evolving practice reflects both experimentation and storytelling, inviting viewers into slightly spooky, deeply imaginative worlds.
Laura Moul (work featured to the right) approaches winter through the lens of photography and mixed media. Using digital capture with minimal postproduction, her work evokes emotional memory and the quiet beauty of natural landscapes. In addition to her artistic practice, Laura is deeply committed to arts leadership, serving on boards for regional photography and art organizations and fostering connections among fellow creatives.

Experience the Season

Winter Solstice 3 is not meant to be explained, but to be experienced. Each artist responds to winter in their own voice, medium, and mood, creating a collective conversation that unfolds as you move through the gallery.

By supporting exhibitions like this, RenewAll continues to invest in artists while strengthening Central City as a destination for creativity and connection. We believe that vibrant neighborhoods are built when artists are supported, stories are shared, and community members feel invited inside.

Gallery 610 is free and open to the public and located upstairs at 610 W. 14th Street, Huntington, WV. We invite you to visit, spend time with the work, and discover what winter might mean to you. Most works on display are for sale.
