Furniture Finds at Hattie & Nans: A Mid-Century Cabinet with Slate Top
Hattie and Nan’s Antiques and Rare Books is full of furniture worth a second look, and this small mid-century cabinet is a great place to start.
Handmade and built with care, it dates to the late 1960s or early 1970s, and the design shows it. The clean lines and warm wood tones are classic mid-century, and the petite proportions fit in almost any room. The slate top gives it a sleek, dark surface that is ready for a lamp, a stack of books, or a tray of your favorite glasses.
The details are what make it special. Two paneled doors close with brass ring pulls, and brass hinges on the front and sides add a handsome, handcrafted touch. Brass and slate against warm wood is a combination that looks good in a modern home and feels right at home in a vintage one.
Open the doors, and you’ll find a shelf and a roomy lower space. It’s sized for a petite home bar, with room for bottles, glassware, and everything you need to host. It also could hold a good stack of vinyl records, as currently shown at the shop, which makes it a natural fit for anyone with a turntable and a growing collection. Or put it to work wherever your home needs a little extra storage: an entryway, a hallway, a living room corner, or beside a favorite chair.
Pieces like this are one reason Central City is such a rewarding place to shop for antiques. Furniture with real craftsmanship, character, and history is hard to find, and Hattie & Nans has plenty of it. This cabinet is just one of many pieces on the floor, and we’ll be highlighting more of them here on the blog in the coming weeks.
Stop by to see this cabinet in person, and take your time exploring the rest of the shop while you’re there. You never know what you’ll find!
